В последние 40-50 лет уничтожены обширные и могучие лесные массивы, по степям и лесостепям было распахано всё, что можно было, взрыли недра земли тысячами карьеров, соорудили более 300 водохранилищ, создали тысячи промышленных и сельскохозяйственных производств, прорыли десятки тысяч километров каналов и обводнили миллионы гектаров земель, передвинули толщи соленосных скоплений в плодородные почвы, перегородили главную водную артерию бассейна – Волгу – глухими плотинами – тромбами, именно тромбами, потому что в экологических системах реки выступают в роли венозных систем, а выпадающие атмосферные осадки – артериальных.
Развивая на берегах Волги и её бассейне гигантское хозяйство, мы не думали: а выдержит ли такую нагрузку экологическая система бассейна Волги? Всё ли мы сделали для того, чтобы сберечь великое национальное достояние – Волгу – матушку с её красотой и природными богатствами?
В настоящее время Волга из проточной реки превратилась в цепь слабо проточных водохранилищ, где всё её физические, химические и биологические свойства изменились коренным образом. Во всёй гидрографической системе Волги водообмен уменьшился в 12 раз. Из названных 150 тысяч притоков реки исчезло более 30 %. Большинство истоков речек, ручьёв, родников забиты, загрязнены, утрамбованы, обезлесены, разрыты, осушены, часто используются для промышленной и гражданской застройки, складов горючиго и ядохимикатов, стоянок скота. Всё это привело к резкому ухудшению качества воды. Самоочищаемость Волги, которая ещё в пятидесятые годы считалась питьевой водой, снизилась в десятки раз и она стала на большом протяжении антисанитарным водоёмом. В ней обнаружено более миллиона химических веществ, многое из которых токсичны. Донные и взвешенные на носы, поступающие с бассейна и ранее удобрявшие пойменные и заливные земли, на 90 % задерживаются в водохранилищах и откладываются на их днищах, загрязняя воду и теряясь безвозвратно. Туда же идут и те 300 миллионов тонн земли, которая ежегодно обрушивается с берегов в волжскую воду, так что мутность её в прибрежной зоне в непогоду достигает 10 тысяч миллиграммов в одном литре, что сопоставимо с мутностью воды самой мутной реки мира – Хуанхе. Чтобы решить все эти проблемы экологии- нужно устранить все вышеперечисленные проблемы, а это уже невозможно. Процесс к сожалению необратим. и все пути решения - это из области фантастики.
