The secular variations of the geomagnetic field refer to the variability of the Earth's magnetic field over time and in a wide range of periods, from minutes to hundreds and thousands of years. These variations reflect a complex set of physico-chemical phenomena in the Earth's core, lithosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere. They are used to investigate modern geodynamic processes at different depths, from the surface layers of the Earth's crust to the core of the Earth.

Data on geomagnetic variations with periods over 1 year, known as secular variations (SV), are widely used to study these processes. The spatial structure of secular variations of the geomagnetic field consists of global, regional, and local components. Global peculiarities or focuses of SV cover areas of thousands of kilometers and have their sources in the Earth's core. Regional and local effects, on the other hand, are determined by modern physico-chemical, geodynamic, and electromagnetic phenomena in the Earth's crust and upper mantle.

The existing chain of magnetic observatories in Europe allows for detailed studies of the global and regional effects in secular variations. Local anomalies of secular variations, also known as tectomagnetic effects, have been studied primarily in geodynamic and seismoprognostic testing grounds.
