If you go to the very depths of the Celtic legends, you first noticed this creature Roman conquerors. Introduction

The Loch Ness Monster, also known as Nessie, is a legendary creature that is said to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Sightings and reported evidence of the monster have been reported since the 6th century AD.

Sightings and Evidence

The earliest report of a creature in Loch Ness dates back to 565 AD, when Saint Columba supposedly witnessed a giant beast swimming across the River Ness. In 1933, a road was built along the loch which increased visitor numbers and sightings. The most famous photograph of Nessie, known as the "Surgeon's Photo", was taken in 1934 and appeared to show a long necked creature rising out of the water. However, this photo was later revealed to be a hoax using a toy submarine.

Other reported evidence includes sonar readings and footage of unidentified objects in the loch. In 2003, sonar readings by the Loch Ness Project discovered unusual shapes on the loch bed which could have been giant eels. However, no definitive proof of a large animal has been found. Satellite analysis in 2016 detected anomalies in the loch which could have been caused by unknown creatures.

Theories on the Identity of Nessie

There are several theories about what the Loch Ness Monster could be if it exists:

- Plesiosaur theory: Some believe Nessie is a surviving plesiosaur, a marine reptile from the time of the dinosaurs. However, most scientists reject this idea as plesiosaurs needed warm waters to survive.

- Giant eel theory: It has been proposed that sightings are of a giant eel, such as a European conger. Eels could potentially explain sightings of long necks.

- Other theories: Others have suggested Nessie is a giant catfish, giant turtle, or even a log or boat seen from a distance. Without proof, the true identity remains unknown.
