Это не правило, а образец , по которому надо задать вопросы о наличии того или иного продукта и есть варианты ответа. MANY используем для продуктов, которые посчитать можем - помидоры, яблоки, яйца. MUCH -  переводится МНОГО, но для продуктов, которые посчитать нельзя - сахарный песок , масло, сыр, мясо , сок. Эти продукты считаем ломтиками, килограммами, упаковками.
1)How much bread is there? Сколько здесь хлеба, (мы не говорим о крошках, ломтиках, буханках. Вообще-то хлеб там, как продукт есть, поэтому используем MUCH. - A lot! - Полно! Много!  или Not much! - немного! (пора в магазин).2) How much olive oil is there? - Not much.3) How many eggs are there? - Not many! A lot/
