The Romans invaded Britain in AD 43 and, while pursuing the ancient Britons along the Thames, they arrived at the first suitable crossing point. They established a garrison there, which eventually became the foundation of the city we now know as London. The Romans also constructed a bridge over the river to facilitate their military activities and trade.
Over time, however, the bridge fell into disrepair, and the entire area became vulnerable to Viking raids. In AD 886, Alfred the Great successfully expelled the raiders, and the bridge was repaired. As a result, the city began to thrive once again, becoming a significant trading hub and an important center of commerce.
Unfortunately, a hundred years later, the Vikings returned to London. However, this time, King Ethelred devised a clever plan to thwart their attack. He sailed up the Thames, attached ropes to London Bridge, and then headed downriver, pulling the bridge down in the process. This strategic move ensured the Vikings' defeat and safeguarded the city from further invasions.
Throughout its history, London has faced numerous challenges and triumphs, and the story of the Romans, Vikings, and the iconic London Bridge is just one chapter in its fascinating narrative.
