At first glance, Inishmore may appear to be exactly the same as it was fifty years ago, but in reality, it has undergone significant changes. Colman Coneely, a 70-year-old islander, reflects on the past, recalling that during his youth, few tourists could reach Inishmore. In those days, there were no airports or ferry boats; transportation was limited to donkeys and small fishing boats. Life was challenging, marked by modest means — small stone cottages, a lack of electricity, and no running water.

In contrast to the quiet, undeveloped nature of Inishmore in the past, today it has transformed into a bustling destination. Coneely notes that up to 2,000 tourists per day can now visit the island. The introduction of an airport, as well as the availability of cars, buses, bicycles, and large ferry boats, has made accessibility much easier.

Life on Inishmore has seen a remarkable shift. Coneely emphasizes the improved living conditions, citing new and modern houses, increased financial resources, and the advent of electricity and running water. The island, once characterized by tranquility, now thrives with activity. Guest houses, restaurants, and numerous souvenir shops cater to the needs and desires of the influx of visitors.

In summary, the evolution of Inishmore over the past fifty years reflects a profound transformation from a secluded and challenging existence to a thriving tourist destination with modern amenities and conveniences.
