Difference Between Shadow and Shade
Shadow and shade are related to the absence or presence of light, but they have different meanings and applications.
Shadow refers to the dark area produced by an object coming between rays of light and a surface. It is the shape, darkness, or coolness caused by an object blocking the direct light.
Shade, on the other hand, refers to the comparative darkness caused by the interception or screening of rays of light. It can also refer to a place or an area of relative darkness, especially as caused by light being intercepted by an object.
Examples
- An example of a shadow is when a person or an object blocks the sunlight, creating a dark area on the ground. This is illustrated in the following snippet: "The red cedar trees are... shade for prairie animals." - An example of shade is when a tree provides relief from the sun, creating a cooler area underneath it. This is demonstrated in the snippet: "I have a stereo and a video ... shadow combined once again to create an illusion this time on the surface..."
- Another example of shade is when a person seeks refuge from the sun under a tree. This is depicted in the snippet: "to ride on the roof of or ... shade shadow, mood temper, idea notion, freedom independence..."
