In 1492, Columbus set sail with three ships – the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria – with the intention of reaching Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. However, instead of reaching Asia, he landed on an island in the Bahamas, which he believed to be part of the East Indies.
