The first modern Olympic games were held in Athens in 1896

The first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. These Games marked the revival of the ancient Olympic Games, which had been held in ancient Greece from at least 776 BC until they were banned in the late 4th century AD. The idea to revive the Olympics and hold them in a modern context was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and sports enthusiast.
The 1896 Athens Olympics featured 13 countries and 241 athletes competing in 43 events. The sports included in these Games were athletics (track and field), cycling, swimming, gymnastics, weightlifting, wrestling, and more. The Games took place at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, which had been constructed for the purpose of these Olympics and was designed to resemble the ancient Greek stadiums.
The first modern Olympics were a significant event in the history of sports and laid the foundation for the modern Olympic Games we know today, with their emphasis on international competition and sportsmanship. Since then, the Olympics have been held every four years, with the exception of some wartime cancellations, and have grown to become one of the world's most significant sporting events.
