Луганск является одним из областных центров Украины. Он расположен на берегах рек Лугань и Ольховая. Город является крупным промышленным центром. Его называют колыбелью южной металлургии. Здесь развиты такие отрасли промышленности, как машиностроение, тепловозостроение, угольная, легкая, пищевая и другие. В Луганске находятся пять высших учебных заведений. В городе есть два театра — украинской музыкальной драмы и театр кукол. Кроме этого, есть филармония, цирк и различные музеи. Самый известный из них — музей В. И. Даля. Место, где расположен Луганск, было заселено в первой половине XVII века. В XVII — XVII! веках эта территория принадлежала Донскому казачьему войску. Сам Луганск как населенный пункт (город) был основан в 1795 году. Сейчас это современный город с новыми районами, широкими улицами и прекрасными парками.

Lugansk is one of the regional centres of Ukraine. It is situated on the bank of the rivers Lugan and Olkhovaya. The city is a large industrial centre. It is called the cradle of southern metallurgy. Such branches of industry as machine building, locomotive building, coalmining, light and food are well-developed there. Five higher educational establishments are situated in the city. There are also two theatres — the Ukrainian Music Drama Theatre and the Puppet Theatre — in Lugansk. Beside them the Philarmonic Society, a circus and different museums are situated in it. The most famous of them is the museum of V. I. Dai. The place, where Lugansk is situated now was inhabited in the first half of the 17th century. In the 17th-18th century that territory was owned by the Don Cossacks Army. Lugansk as a town was founded in 1795. Now it is a modern city with new districts, wide streets and marvellous parks.
