The Great Bard William Shakespeare is one of the
most famous writers of all. For hundreds of years his plays have been running in theatres all over the world in just about every language there is. Shakespeare’s plays were fantastically popular in his own time and they still are today. The great author was born in 1564 on 23 April to John and Mary Shakespeare. John Shakespeare was a glove maker and the family was quite comfortable. They lived in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small but busy town in central England. John Shakespeare sent his son William to school. When the boy left it at the age of about 14, he had to work in the family business. William Shakespeare didn’t go to university and never received a university education. He married early, at the age of 18. He and his wife Anne had three children, two girls and a boy. Sadly, the boy died when he was just 11. Then suddenly Shakespeare left Stratford for London. We don’t know for sure why he did it. A lot of people believe that he was thrilled by the idea of becoming an actor. In those days theatre was a very popular and not expensive form of entertainment in the country. People watched all kinds of plays which travelling theatre groups performed in the streets and squares. The performances were rather primitive: there was no scenery, no music, no special effects. Probably Shakespeare joined one of such groups when he decided to devote his life to acting. The city of London was noisy, dangerous and possibly very dirty in those days. There were several theatres, or playhouses. One of them, the Theatre, was popular with Queen Elizabeth I herself. Here Shakespeare began his acting career and later started to write plays. In those days the tastes of the audiences were very different from what we like now. Theatre-goers enjoyed it when they saw cruel scenes or when there was blood all over the stage (they used sheep blood to produce the effect). Tragedies in which the central characters died at the end were especially popular with the public.

The renowned playwright William Shakespeare, often referred to as the Great Bard, is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated writers in history. His plays have been performed in theaters worldwide and translated into numerous languages for hundreds of years. Even today, Shakespeare's works continue to captivate audiences.
Born on April 23, 1564, to John and Mary Shakespeare, the family resided in the bustling town of Stratford-upon-Avon, situated in central England. John Shakespeare worked as a glove maker, providing the family with a comfortable life. He sent his son William to school, but at around the age of 14, William had to leave formal education to assist in the family business.
Unlike many other notable writers of his time, Shakespeare did not attend university and did not receive a formal higher education. At the young age of 18, he married Anne, and together they had three children - two daughters and a son. Tragically, their son passed away at the tender age of 11.
At some point, Shakespeare made a significant decision to leave Stratford and venture to London. While the exact reason for this move remains uncertain, many believe he was eager to pursue a career in acting. Theatrical performances were highly popular during that era and served as an affordable form of entertainment. Traveling theatre groups would stage various plays in streets and squares, presenting shows without elaborate scenery, music, or special effects. It is likely that Shakespeare joined one of these groups when he decided to dedicate his life to acting.
London during Shakespeare's time was a bustling, dangerous, and potentially filthy city. It housed several theatres, or playhouses, with one of them being "The Theatre," even favored by Queen Elizabeth I herself. Here, Shakespeare began his acting journey and eventually transitioned into writing plays.
The taste of the audience during that period greatly differed from modern preferences. Theatre-goers reveled in scenes of cruelty and bloodshed on stage (often using sheep's blood for dramatic effect). Tragedies where central characters met grim fates were particularly beloved by the public.
