Both "can" and "be able to" can be used to express ability or possibility. However, there are some slight differences in usage.

  1. "Can": "Can" is a modal verb used to indicate ability, permission, or possibility in the present or future. It is used in positive statements and questions.

Examples:

  • I can swim. (I have the ability to swim.)
  • Can you play the piano? (Do you have the ability to play the piano?)
  • She can speak Spanish fluently. (She has the ability to speak Spanish.)
  1. "Be able to": "Be able to" is a phrase that can also express ability or possibility, but it is more flexible in terms of tense and formality. It can be used in various tenses, including the past, present, and future. It is often used in contexts where "can" might not be appropriate, such as when referring to specific situations or accomplishments.

Examples:

  • I was able to solve the problem. (Past tense)
  • They will be able to attend the meeting tomorrow. (Future tense)
  • He has been able to visit many countries. (Present perfect tense)
  • Were you able to finish the report on time? (Past tense and question form)

In general, "can" is more commonly used in everyday speech and informal contexts, while "be able to" is often used in more formal writing or situations that require specific details or achievements. However, both "can" and "be able to" can be used interchangeably in many cases to express ability or possibility.
