                                        The Bornean orangutan

One of the species at risk of extinction is the Bornean orangutan.

Weighing up to 90 kg, the Bornean orangutan is about 1-1.5 m tall and has got an arm span as long as 2.5 m.

These are very clever animals who use tools in daily activities. Similar to humans, baby orangutans cry, whimper, and smile at their mothers.

Bornean orangutans live in the rainforest on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. They have got strong hands and hand-like feet, along with flexible hips and long arms that allow the orangutans to live primarily in treetops.

They feed on fruit, leaves, bark, flowers, and insects.

Due to deforestation and illegal hunting Bornean orangutans are classified as an endangered species.  Their population has declined by 60% since 1950, and it is estimated that their numbers will fall by another 22% by the year 2025.

____

Title: Near Extinction: A Critical Look at Endangered Animal Species

Introduction: The alarming rise in the number of endangered animal species in recent decades has become a pressing global concern. Human activities, such as habitat destruction, poaching, pollution, and climate change, have pushed numerous species to the brink of extinction. This text aims to shed light on the topic of near-extinction animals, highlighting some notable examples and emphasizing the urgent need for conservation efforts.

  1. The Sumatran Tiger: The Sumatran tiger, native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is critically endangered. With less than 400 individuals remaining in the wild, deforestation for agricultural purposes and illegal hunting pose significant threats to their survival. Conservation initiatives and stricter law enforcement are crucial to saving this majestic species from extinction.

  2. The Black Rhinoceros: Once widespread across Africa, the black rhinoceros now teeters on the edge of extinction. Relentless poaching driven by the illegal trade in rhino horn has decimated their population. Conservation organizations and governments are working to protect the remaining black rhinos, implementing anti-poaching measures and engaging local communities in conservation efforts.

  3. The Amur Leopard: The Amur leopard, native to the Russian Far East and Northeast China, is one of the rarest big cats on the planet. With fewer than 100 individuals left, habitat loss, poaching, and climate change threaten its existence. Conservation programs focusing on protected areas and raising awareness among local communities are essential for preserving this iconic species.

  4. The Vaquita: The vaquita, a small porpoise endemic to the Gulf of California, faces imminent extinction. The main cause of its decline is accidental entanglement in fishing nets intended for other species. Despite conservation efforts, the vaquita population has dramatically decreased, with estimates suggesting less than 10 individuals remaining. Urgent action is needed to enforce fishing regulations and develop alternative fishing methods to save this unique marine mammal.

  5. The Mountain Gorilla: The mountain gorilla, inhabiting the Virunga Mountains in Africa, has faced significant threats due to deforestation, habitat encroachment, and armed conflicts. Conservation initiatives, including protected areas and anti-poaching patrols, have helped stabilize their population. However, continued efforts are necessary to ensure the long-term survival of this critically endangered primate species.

Conclusion: The near extinction of animal species represents a grave ecological crisis caused by human activities. It is essential for governments, conservation organizations, and individuals to collaborate in protecting and restoring habitats, combating poaching and illegal trade, and raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity. By taking immediate action, we can prevent the irreversible loss of these magnificent creatures and preserve the delicate balance of our planet's ecosystems for future generations.
