Climate Change and Global Warming: Causes and Consequences What is climate change? Climate change is a change in the average temperature and rainfall in a region over a long period of time. For example, 20,000 years ago, a great territory of the United States was covered in glaciers. Today, this country has a warmer climate and fewer glaciers. Global climate change is the change over the entire Earth. What are the consequences of global climate change? Rising sea levels; Shrinking mountain glaciers; Faster ice melting in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic; Changes in flower and plant blooming times. Global air temperatures near Earth's surface have gone up slightly in the past 100 years but the past five years have been the warmest five years in many centuries. Many people are concerned about this warming. Scientists predict, if Earth’s climate continues to warm, the intensity and amount of rainfall during storms such as hurricanes will increase. Droughts and heat waves will also become more intense as the climate warms. Global warming can also have big impacts on the health of Earth's plants and animals. What causes climate change? Today, scientists agree that one of the most significant factors of global warming is human activities. Some gases in Earth’s atmosphere block heat from escaping. This is called the greenhouse effect. Human activities — such as burning fuel to power factories, cars and buses — are changing the natural greenhouse. These changes cause the atmosphere to trap more heat than it used to, leading to a warmer Earth. One of the greatest glaciers in the USA has disappeared recently. Shrinking of mountain glaciers is the consequence of global climate change. If global warming continues, droughts will disappear.

- True
Shrinking of mountain glaciers is the consequence of global climate change.
- True
If global warming continues, droughts will disappear.
- False (This statement is not supported by the text. It actually states that droughts will become more intense as the climate warms.)
So, out of the given statements, 12 are true, 1 is false, and none are marked as "Not Given."
