Big Ben is one of the most popular places of interest in London and symbols of England. Every year many people visit the capital of Great Britain to see it and take some photos with it in the background. It is thought that Big Ben is a high tower with a very big clock, but that’s not really true.
In fact, this tower is called Saint Stephens Tower, but people, even those who live in the UK, are used to calling it "Big Ben." Actually, Big Ben is the huge bell inside the building. Its weight is about thirteen tons and it rings every hour daily: once at one o'clock, twice at two o'clock and so on. However, people who live near the tower can hear at New Year’s Night how the bell strikes thirteen. It’s considered to be the biggest bell ever made in the country. The bell was firstly used in 1859 and was cracked soon because of the heavy hammer, which struck too strong. After this situation the hammer was changed, but that crack is still there.
There are many hypotheses for the origin of the name “Big Ben”. The most popular one suggests that the bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was responsible for the installation. Some of people say he was really tall and that’s why this bell is called big, but the majority believe it is called Big because of its size.
Big Ben is one of the best-known landmarks in Europe. Nowadays the word Big Ben connects the bell, the clock and the tower at the same time. The tower is closed to the general public, but people with a "special interest" might offer an excursion for additional payment.

Big Ben is not just a clock; it's a guardian of time and a symbol of London's rich history. Standing tall and proud amidst the hustle and bustle of Westminster, this iconic structure never fails to captivate both locals and tourists alike.
Its name, often mistakenly attributed to the entire tower, actually refers to the Great Bell that resides within. This magnificent piece of horological engineering has tolled the hours since 1859, serving as a constant reminder of the passage of time in this ever-evolving city.
As the hands of the clock meticulously sweep around its face, one can't help but be drawn into a sense of nostalgia. The chimes of Big Ben have witnessed historic events, from royal weddings to wartime resilience. They have marked moments of joy and sorrow, their resonance echoing through generations.
Big Ben's architectural grandeur is nothing short of breathtaking. Its neo-Gothic design, adorned with intricate details, stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of yesteryears. The tower reaches an impressive height, casting a long shadow over the River Thames, and offering an unbeatable panoramic view of the sprawling metropolis from its summit.
Surrounded by the British Parliament and Westminster Abbey, Big Ben stands as a stoic guardian, a silent observer of the political dramas that have unfolded in its proximity. It has seen prime ministers come and go, debates that have shaped nations, and the relentless march of progress.
At night, when London's city lights come alive, Big Ben dons a different kind of splendor. The illuminated clock face shines like a beacon, guiding lost souls through the labyrinthine streets of London.
In this fast-paced world, where time seems to slip through our fingers like grains of sand, Big Ben remains a steadfast reminder that, no matter how much changes, some things will always endure. It embodies the resilience of a city, a nation, and a culture, and its timeless charm continues to hold us in its spell. Big Ben, a living legend, will forever be more than just a clock; it is the heart and soul of London, a symbol of history, and a guardian of the city's enduring spirit.
