Today Astana is not only the capital of Kazakhstan but also one of the most beautiful Asian cities. Formerly, it was a small town known as Akmola, which served as a Russian fortification. The location for the town was chosen as a strategic point and a caravans’ route. For a long time the town was famous for its fairs and trade connections. People from all corners of Central Asia travelled there to buy and sell the goods.

My Summer Holiday in Karaganda and Astana

During my summer holiday, I had the opportunity to visit two cities in Kazakhstan: Karaganda and Astana. These cities are both significant in their own ways and offer unique experiences for visitors.

Karaganda is a city located in central Kazakhstan. It is known for its rich history and industrial heritage. One of the main attractions in Karaganda is the KarLag Museum, which provides insights into the Gulag labor camp system that operated in the region during the Soviet era. The museum offers a glimpse into the lives of prisoners and the harsh conditions they endured. Another notable landmark in Karaganda is the Central Park, where visitors can relax, enjoy nature, and take part in various recreational activities.

Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, is a modern metropolis with impressive architecture and a vibrant cultural scene. One of the must-visit attractions in Astana is the Bayterek Tower, a symbol of the city. Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the tower and enjoy panoramic views of Astana. The Nur-Astana Mosque is another architectural marvel that showcases the Islamic heritage of Kazakhstan. Additionally, the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, designed by renowned architect Norman Foster, is a unique pyramid-shaped building that hosts various cultural events and exhibitions.

Both Karaganda and Astana offer a range of cultural and culinary experiences. Visitors can explore local markets to sample traditional Kazakh cuisine, which includes dishes like beshbarmak (boiled meat with pasta) and kazy (horse meat sausage). The cities also have a vibrant arts scene, with theaters, museums, and galleries showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Kazakhstan.

In conclusion, my summer holiday in Karaganda and Astana was a memorable experience. I had the opportunity to explore the historical significance of Karaganda and witness the modernity and cultural diversity of Astana. Both cities offer a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that make them worth visiting.
