One example of an animal on the verge of extinction is the Sumatran orangutan. It is found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and is critically endangered due to deforestation and illegal hunting. The clearing of forests for palm oil plantations has led to significant habitat loss for these orangutans. With their habitat shrinking, they face a higher risk of extinction.

Another example is the vaquita, a small porpoise found in the Gulf of California. It is the most endangered marine mammal in the world, with only a few individuals remaining. The vaquita population has declined rapidly due to entanglement in fishing nets, primarily meant for catching the totoaba fish, whose swim bladder is highly valued in the illegal wildlife trade. Despite conservation efforts, the vaquita's future remains uncertain.
