Since 1968 every first weekend in July thousands of people gather near the city of Samara, on the Mastryukovo lakes. They come to attend Grushinsky Festival which is an annual Russian bard song festival. The festival takes its name from Valeri Grushin, a student and a singer-songwriter who died during a backcountry camping trip trying to save his drowning friends.
During Soviet times, the festival was often attended by Yuri Vizbor, Tatyana and Sergey Nikitins, Bulat Okudzhava, Alexander Dolsky, Oleg Mitayev and other famous Soviet singer-songwriters.
The major landmark of the festival is the stage built on the raft. It has the shape of a guitar, and its fingerboard serves as a bridge to the shore. The Grushin Mountain ridge serves as natural stands for thousands of visitors. The number of visitors increased every year, starting from only 600 in 1968 and reaching 140,000 spectators in 1997.
In the late 1990s, the festival became commercialized, and attracted Russian rock musicians, such as Yuri Shevchuk of DDT.

The Maslenitsa festival is celebrated in late February or early March, just before the beginning of Lent. The festival is all about saying goodbye to winter and welcoming the spring. The main symbol of the festival is a round pancake called "blini." It is said that the round shape of the pancake represents the sun, and by eating it, people hope to invoke the sun's warmth and light.
During the festival, there are many different activities that take place. People dress up in brightly colored costumes, and there are parades and processions through the streets. One of the most popular activities is the building of the Maslenitsa doll. This doll is made of straw and cloths and is meant to represent the winter. On the last day of the festival, the doll is burned to symbolize the end of winter.
There is also a lot of food and drink during the festival. The blini pancakes are a traditional food for Maslenitsa. They are served with toppings like butter, honey, and sour cream. There is also a lot of vodka and other drinks to celebrate the end of winter.
What I particularly like about the Maslenitsa festival is its sense of community. It brings people together from all walks of life to celebrate their culture and traditions. You don't have to be Russian to take part in the festival; everyone is welcome.
In conclusion, the Maslenitsa festival is a wonderful celebration of Russian culture and traditions. It is a time to come together with friends and family to enjoy good food, drink, and company. The festival's focus on saying goodbye to winter and welcoming spring is a universal theme that anyone can appreciate.
