The Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre on August 21, 1911, between 7 and 8:30 am, while the building was closed to the public. It was initially assumed that the painting was being photographed, but it was later discovered missing. The only clue was the discarded frame found on the stairs. For over two years, the painting was hidden in the Paris flat of an Italian man named Vincenzo Peruggia, who had worked at the Louvre and knew the building well. Peruggia later took the painting to Florence, Italy, in an attempt to sell it, but was caught by the police.
