                        New Year Celebrations in England

In England people celebrate the New Year from the evening of December 31st into January 1st. Until 2000, the New Year was considered a modest home holiday. However, after the magnificent celebration of the millennium, British people began to have New Year’s Eve house parties and special midnight parties organized in discotheques, pubs, clubs, and bars.

There are also a lot of theme parties, cruises, carnivals, live concerts, and salsa dance celebrations occurring in different parts of England on New Year's Day.

One of the New Year traditions is connected with the clock. On the stroke of midnight, people open the back door of the house to make the old year go. Also everyone present in the party, on the road, in the house hoot, shout, whistle, and create noise to mark the arrival of the New Year. It is followed by hugs and kisses and a drinking toast.

The most prominent New Year's Eve celebration in England is that of Central London, where the arrival of midnight is greeted with the chimes of Big Ben.

One of the most recent traditions is a New Year's Eve firework display which takes place on the River Thames in London, where the London Eye and Big Ben are situated.
