Initially, they were covered in smooth, polished limestone casing stones, which have mostly eroded or been removed over time. The pyramids were originally capped with pyramidions, which were made of gold or other precious materials, but these have been lost as well.

During the Middle Ages, the pyramids were often used as sources of building materials by nearby cities, resulting in the removal of many of the outer stones. However, the core structures of the pyramids remained intact. In modern times, conservation efforts have been made to preserve and protect these ancient structures.
