My Undersized Load


Shortly after we moved to rural South Carolina, we found out Clemson Ag Extension was selling all sorts of berry and fruit trees at great rates. We needed quite a few things because the property we bought was cleared cow pasture and, besides a huge pecan tree, had no other trees on it.

So I ordered blueberry and blackberry bushes and apple, peach and pear trees. When it came time to pick up the order, my friend called to ask if I could pick hers up, too. I told her we’d better take two trucks.
When I got to the extension office I was shocked to find the pickup area empty except for some little bundles of twigs tied with string. I asked where my order was and the attendant led me to one of those bundles. They were bare root cuttings, which take up very little space. 
I could lift mine in one hand.
I mentioned to the attendant that I felt silly bringing a truck to pick up the order. It was then that I noticed a man behind me. He ruefully stated, “Don’t feel bad; I brought a trailer.”

Once upon a time, in a small town called Blissville, there lived a mischievous squirrel named Charlie. Charlie was known for his love of acorns and his knack for causing trouble. One sunny day, Charlie spotted a picnic blanket spread out near the park. The smell of delicious sandwiches and fresh fruit wafted through the air, tempting his taste buds.

Unable to resist the temptation, Charlie devised a plan. He climbed up a nearby tree and carefully positioned himself above the picnic blanket. With a sly grin on his face, he waited for the perfect moment.

As the picnic-goers chatted and laughed, Charlie seized the opportunity. He jumped from the tree, aiming for the plate of sandwiches. But in his excitement, he missed his mark and landed right in the middle of a fruit salad bowl!

Surrounded by colorful fruits, Charlie looked like a squirrel in a fruity bathtub. The picnic-goers were startled and burst into laughter. Charlie's fur was covered in mashed bananas, squished strawberries, and sticky pineapple juice. He tried to wiggle his way out but only managed to make an even bigger mess.

The laughter continued as Charlie desperately tried to escape the fruit salad bowl. Finally, one kind-hearted picnic-goer gently lifted him out, his fur dripping with fruity goodness. Charlie scampered away, embarrassed but determined to find another adventure.

From that day on, the people of Blissville always chuckled whenever they saw Charlie the squirrel. And every picnic they had, they made sure to keep an extra bowl of fruit salad, just in case Charlie decided to make another hilarious appearance.
