Термин предложил в 1866 г. немецкий биолог Эрнст Геккель.
Экология (от греч. — дом, хозяйство) — наука, изучающая взаимоотношения живой и неживой природы.
Эрнст Геккель с 1852 изучал медицину и естествознание в Берлинском, Вюрцбургском и Венском университетах. В 1857 получил диплом врача. С 1861 приват-доцент, в 1865—1909 — профессор Йенского университета.
