Большая панда относится к редким видам животных. Численность особей на воле составляет порядка 1600 медведей. Район расселения – центральный Китай, в основном горные районы и предгорье Тибета. 

Панда имеет ряд отличительных признаков. Это относительно небольшие животные, длиной тела не больше 1,5 м., масса животного обычно доходит до 160 кг. В отличие от других медведей у панды длинный хвост – 12 см, - и тело покрыто густой шерстью. Особенно выделяются черные лапы и черные круги вокруг глаз.

Панды – вегетарианцы. Основной их рацион составляют листья бамбука. При возможности панда может полакомиться яйцами птиц, выпавшими из гнезда, но бамбуковая диета – основа пищи панды. Продолжительность жизни панд – 14-20 лет. Панда-долгожитель прожила 26 лет.
