Древесина или ксилема - это проводящая ткань растения, которая транспортирует воду с растворёнными в ней минеральными солями в зелёную часть растения для последующего фотосинтеза; состоит из одревесневевших ( мёртвых ) клеток;
Оба сосуда состоят из продолговатых клеток, но Ксилема имеет перегородки между клетками, а флоэма - нет.

Functions of Stem Vessels
The stem vessels, also known as vascular tissues, play several important functions in plants. These functions include:
1. Transportation of Water and Nutrients: The stem vessels are responsible for the upward movement of water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves and other parts of the plant. This process is known as the transpiration stream. The vessels consist of xylem tissue, which contains specialized cells called tracheids and vessel elements that form continuous tubes for the transport of water and minerals.
2. Transportation of Sugars: The stem vessels also facilitate the movement of sugars and other organic compounds, such as amino acids and hormones, from the leaves to other parts of the plant. This process is known as translocation and occurs through the phloem tissue, which is another component of the stem vessels.
3. Support and Structure: The stem vessels provide structural support to the plant, allowing it to stand upright. The xylem tissue, in particular, contains lignin, a complex polymer that strengthens the cell walls of the vessels, making them rigid and resistant to collapse. This rigidity helps maintain the plant's overall structure and prevents wilting or bending under the weight of leaves and flowers.
4. Storage: Some stem vessels, such as the parenchyma cells found in the pith, can store water, nutrients, and other substances. These stored materials can be used during periods of drought or when the plant requires additional resources for growth and development.
5. Defense: The stem vessels also play a role in plant defense mechanisms. For example, the xylem tissue can produce substances like resins and gums that help seal wounds and prevent the entry of pathogens. Additionally, the vessels can transport defense compounds, such as phytochemicals and antimicrobial substances, to different parts of the plant to protect against pests and diseases.
In summary, the stem vessels in plants perform vital functions such as water and nutrient transportation, sugar translocation, structural support, storage, and defense mechanisms.
