Muscles in the Torso Skeleton
The torso, also known as the trunk, is the central part of the human body that includes the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. It houses and protects vital organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and intestines. The muscles in the torso play a crucial role in supporting and stabilizing the spine, facilitating movement, and aiding in respiration and digestion.
There are several major muscle groups that make up the muscles in the torso skeleton. These include:
1. Abdominal Muscles: The abdominal muscles are located in the front of the torso and play a key role in core stability and movement. They include the rectus abdominis (commonly known as the "six-pack" muscles), the external obliques, internal obliques, and transverse abdominis.
2. Back Muscles: The back muscles are located on the posterior side of the torso and are responsible for maintaining posture, supporting the spine, and facilitating movement. They include the erector spinae muscles, which run along the length of the spine, as well as the latissimus dorsi, trapezius, and rhomboid muscles.
3. Chest Muscles: The chest muscles, also known as the pectoral muscles, are located in the front of the torso and are responsible for movements such as pushing and hugging. They include the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor muscles.
4. Shoulder Muscles: The shoulder muscles are located around the shoulder joint and are responsible for movements such as lifting and rotating the arms. They include the deltoid, infraspinatus, supraspinatus, teres major, and teres minor muscles.
5. Pelvic Muscles: The pelvic muscles are located in the lower part of the torso and play a role in supporting the pelvic organs, maintaining posture, and facilitating movement. They include the pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder, uterus, and rectum.
6. Diaphragm: The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the ribcage. It plays a crucial role in respiration by contracting and relaxing to facilitate breathing.
These are just some of the major muscle groups that make up the muscles in the torso skeleton. There are also numerous smaller muscles that contribute to the overall function and movement of the torso.
