What is the stage of AIDS?
AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is a late stage of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. It is characterized by a severely weakened immune system, making individuals vulnerable to opportunistic infections and certain types of cancers.
The progression of HIV infection to AIDS typically occurs in three stages: acute HIV infection, clinical latency, and AIDS.
1. Acute HIV infection: This is the initial stage of HIV infection, which occurs within a few weeks after exposure to the virus. During this stage, the virus replicates rapidly, and individuals may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and rash. However, some people may not experience any symptoms at all.
2. Clinical latency: After the acute stage, the virus enters a period of clinical latency, also known as chronic HIV infection or asymptomatic HIV infection. During this stage, the virus continues to replicate at a lower level, but individuals may not experience any noticeable symptoms for several years. However, the virus is still active and can be transmitted to others.
3. AIDS: The stage of AIDS is reached when the immune system becomes severely damaged, and the CD4 T-cell count drops below a certain level. CD4 T-cells are a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the immune response. When the CD4 count falls below 200 cells per cubic millimeter of blood (or if an AIDS-defining illness occurs), the individual is diagnosed with AIDS.
AIDS is characterized by the occurrence of opportunistic infections (infections that take advantage of a weakened immune system) and certain types of cancers. These infections and cancers can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Some examples of AIDS-defining illnesses include Pneumocystis pneumonia, tuberculosis, Kaposi's sarcoma, and cryptococcal meningitis.
It's important to note that with early diagnosis, access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and proper medical care, the progression from HIV infection to AIDS can be significantly delayed or even prevented.
