По виду полковник был суров, малообщителен; прямой, как штык, он, прихрамывая, проходил через двор, подставив ветру худое морщинистое лицо, ни с кем не вступая в беседу. Вместе с ним переехала его собака — бородатый, шумный эрдельтерьер по кличке Дружок, и кошка с разноцветными глазами. В первые же дни полковник, проходя по двору, молча и решительно вырвал рогатку из рук мальчугана, стрелявшего в котенка. Быть может, и следовало бы сопроводить этот акт поучением, но полковник, видимо, считал, что выражение его лица было и без того красноречивым. Ребята во дворе невзлюбили нового жильца. Его самого они побаивались, с Дружком связываться остерегались и свою нелюбовь вымещали на кошке. Надо сказать, что Дружок и разноцветная кошка были неразлучными друзьями. В отсутствие полковника они сидели рядом на балконе и ждали его или спали на общей подстилке. Балкон был на втором этаже, со двора их было хорошо видно. И вот однажды, когда полковник ушел, кошка решила прогуляться и спустилась вниз. Обеспокоенный Дружок остался один. Он следил за кошкой с балкона, насторожив уши. В это время во двор вбежала ватага мальчуганов. Один из них запустил в кошку камнем, она взобралась на дерево. Окружив дерево, ребята с воинственными воплями забрасывали кошку камнями; онемев от страха, она лезла все выше, но и там камни доставали до нее. Дружок, рыча и лая, метался по балкону. На следующий день родители подали на нового жильца в суд. Вероятно, следуя букве закона, можно было очень быстро закончить это несложное дело, оштрафовав владельца собаки. Но, разобравшись в подробностях, судья поступил иначе. Он признал виновными родителей. Он обвинил их в том, что они плохо воспитывают и плохо знают своих детей, если не разгадали в поступке, который показался им простой шалостью, опасный росток жестокости, попытки безнаказанно расправиться со слабым.
