(3)Все вдруг расставилось по своим местам: многое о того, что я знал жизни полярных лётчиков, как бы повернулось другой стороной, ия представил себе бесконечные полугодовые ночи за полярным кругом, недели изнуряющего ожидания погоды, полёты над снежными горными хребтами, когда глаза невольно высматривают место для вынужденной посадки, полёты в пургу, когда не видишь крыльев своей машины, мучительную возно с запуском мотора на пятидесятилградусном морозе. (4)Я вспомнил страшные рассказы об арктических метелях, которые хоронят человека в двух метрах от дома. (5)Я изучил ночные полёты, когда сразу за стартом начинается тьма и всё время, пока набираешь высоту, кажется, что ощупью идёшь по тёмному коридору. 6)Внизу, на аэродроме, ярко светится полоса, чёрное поле точно пунктирам обведено красноватыми огнями. (7)Линия железной дороги мерцает сигналами разъездов, расставленных с необыкновенной ночной точностью, так непохожей на дневную. (8)Тёмный воздух, невидимая земля. (9)Вот зарево появляется вдали, ещё несколько минут, и это не зарево, а город – тысячи огней, разноцветных, разнообразных... (10)Фантастическая картина! (11)Я научился водить самолёт вслепую, когда всё вокруг окутано белой мглой и кажется, что ты летишь через миллионы лет в другую геологическую эпоху. (12)Как будто не на самолёте, а на машине времени ты несёшься вперёд и вперёд! (13)Я понял, что лётчик должен знать свойства воздуха, все его наклонности и капризы так же, как хороший моряк знает свойства воды. (14)Нужно выбирать ту профессию, в которой ты способен проявить все силы души. (15)Я стремился на Север, к профессии полярного лётчика.
