Страна нуждалась в резком подъеме энергетической базы хозяйственного развития, срочно нужна была энергия; ее могли дать гидроэлектростанции без затраты угля и нефти, которых в то время добывали много меньше, чем сейчас. За 50—60-е годы многие реки нашей страны и прежде всего европейской территории бывшего СССР превратились в каскады гидроэлектростанций с водохранилищами, крупнейшие из которых образованы на Волге, Каме, Днепре, Ангаре, Енисее, частично на Иртыше и других реках. С каждым годом число крупных искусственных водоемов возрастает и в нашей стране и за рубежом.
