The Chechen Language
The Chechen language (also known as Nokhchiin Mott) is one of the Northeast Caucasian languages and is the majority language of the Chechen people. It is spoken primarily in the Chechen Republic, located in the North Caucasus region of Russia.
Some key facts about the Chechen language:
- It is considered to be a Vainakh language along with the Ingush language. These two languages are closely related and share many linguistic features. - Chechen has a rich oral tradition and was not a written language until the 20th century. It first received a Latin alphabet in the 1920s and then a Cyrillic alphabet was introduced in the 1930s during Soviet rule. - There are over 1 million speakers of Chechen worldwide according to estimates. The majority live in the Chechen Republic and neighboring regions of Russia. Significant Chechen communities also exist in other parts of Europe and Central Asia. - The language has many dialects but the Akki-Chu dialect, spoken in the plains region, serves as the basis for the standardized literary language. - Chechen grammar is considered to be very complex with a rich verbal morphology and complex noun case system. It also utilizes many phonetically driven changes in word roots.
One of the most prominent scholars of the Chechen language was Musa Sulimovich Soltikhanov. He was a Chechen linguist born in 1904 who made major contributions to documenting and codifying the Chechen language. Some of his works include:
- A Chechen-Russian dictionary published in four volumes between 1957-1966. - A comprehensive Chechen grammar published in two volumes in 1957 and 1963. - Textbooks and primers for teaching the Chechen language, including a four volume series for primary school students.
Soltikhanov's work was instrumental in developing and promoting the modern standardized Chechen literary language. He established the basic norms and rules of orthography that are still used today. His textbooks introduced generations of Chechen children to their native language and helped preserve it during the Soviet era. Soltikhanov is still widely respected as one of the founders of Chechen linguistics.
