Если сравнивать два произведения А.Н.Островского  "Гроза" и "Бесприданница", которая была написана спустя 20 лет. То купечество в "Грозе" живёт по старым, патриархальным законам. Автор нам показывает купцов, как религиозных, невежественных самодуров (Кабаниха, Дикой), имеющих большую власть и превращающих жизнь людей в ад, т.к. эти люди не разделяют мнение.Купцов в "Бесприданнице", мы видим более культурных и грамотных. Они владеют французским языком, знают как вести прилично в обществе. Они учились в западных университетах. В период капитализма русские купцы живут по другим законам, однако остаются такими же бездушными и циничными. Это связано, что в основе жизни купцов был заложен закон "купи - продай". Купцы были вынуждены вести себя безжалостно, чтобы иметь успех и славу. Именно в купеческой среде ценились деловые качества, а не душевные.
