Ученик московской школы Владимир (Волька) Костыльков во время купания находит кувшин с заточенным туда джинном. Волька вызволяет джинна и начинает его воспитывать. Джинн старается угодить Вольке, но ему это не удается. Вольке, как пионеру Советской страны не нужны богатства, власть над людьми  и прочие блага, которые джинн считает необходимыми. Джинн "помогает" Вольке сдавать экзамен по географии, в результате мальчик экзамен не сдает. Вместе с приятелем Вольки Женей джинн совершает путешествие на ковре-самолете, ходит на футбол и в цирк. Во время приключений джинн Хоттабыч становится все более и более приспособленным к окружающим условиям жизни. Постепенно он начинает учиться грамоте и устраивается на работу в цирке
