The Characters in "Nedorosl" by Fonvizin

"Nedorosl" is a comedy play written by Denis Fonvizin in 1782. The play explores various social issues and satirizes the Russian nobility of the time. In the play, Fonvizin presents both positive and negative characters, each with their own traits and motivations.

The Appeal of Negative Characters

Fonvizin argues that negative characters are often more interesting and engaging than positive characters. He suggests that positive characters tend to be less complex and more predictable, making them appear dull and uninteresting compared to their negative counterparts.

One example of a negative character in "Nedorosl" is the character of Chatsky. Chatsky is a cynical and disillusioned young man who criticizes the hypocrisy and superficiality of the Russian nobility. His sharp wit and biting remarks make him a captivating character, drawing the audience's attention and sparking discussions about societal issues.

The Uninteresting Nature of Positive Characters

On the other hand, Fonvizin portrays positive characters in a more straightforward and less nuanced manner. These characters often adhere to societal norms and lack the depth and complexity of their negative counterparts. They are depicted as naive, easily influenced, and less capable of critical thinking.

One example of a positive character in "Nedorosl" is the character of Sophia. Sophia is a young woman who embodies traditional values and is portrayed as innocent and virtuous. While she serves as a contrast to the negative characters, her lack of complexity and predictable behavior can make her appear less interesting to the audience.

The Theme of Retribution

In "Nedorosl," Fonvizin also explores the theme of retribution, which is carried out by the positive characters. The positive characters in the play, such as Sophia and her father, represent justice and moral rectitude. They seek to expose the flaws and vices of the negative characters and bring about their downfall.

For example, Sophia's father, Famusov, is determined to teach Chatsky a lesson for his critical views and unconventional behavior. Famusov uses his influence and connections to manipulate the situation and ultimately bring about Chatsky's social isolation and humiliation.

This idea of retribution carried out by the positive characters highlights the moral message of the play and reinforces the notion that negative characters will face consequences for their actions.

In conclusion, Fonvizin's "Nedorosl" presents a contrast between positive and negative characters. While negative characters are often portrayed as more interesting and complex, positive characters play a crucial role in carrying out the theme of retribution. The play explores societal issues and satirizes the Russian nobility of the time, providing insights into the nature of human behavior and the consequences of one's actions.
