Как только немецкое войско вступило на лёд озера и двинулось на ополченцев, они стали с боем отступать. Рыцари, считая сражение выигранным, устремились вперёд. Но русские воины по сигналу Александра бросились и справа, и слева на малоповоротливую рыцарскую колонну. Конные дружинники схватились в кровавой сече с тяжёлой кавалерией врага. Во главе суздальской дружины был сам Александр. Мужественно сражались русские воины, их нажим на фланги «свиньи» всё более усиливался и закончился полным разгромом немецкого войска.
