До 90-х СССР и Вьетнам поддерживали друг друга ,в большинстве случаев СССР помогала развивающейся стране .Потом связи начали прерваться из-за глубокого кризиса двусторонних отношений, но дипломатическим отношениям стран уже более 60 лет .Теперь за последние годы Россия начала восстанавливать утраченные политические, экономические и культурные связи.
Товарооборот России и Вьетнама вырос в несколько раз. На переговорах во Владивостоке в сентябре этого года было решено ускорить работу по присоединению Вьетнама к Таможенному союзу.
Замглава Вьетнамский бизнес заинтересован в развитии проектов в РФ. Также Вьетнам вложил средства  проект по добыче нефти в Ненецком автономном округе. При этом, президент России Владимир Путин заявил, что после создания зоны свободной торговли между Таможенным союзом и Вьетнамом товарооборот наших стран может достичь отметки в 10 миллиардов долларов к 2020 году.Президент России Владимир Путин во время своего визита в Вьетнам  отметил, что «ключевую роль в развитии российско-вьетнамской промышленной и инвестиционной кооперации традиционно играет энергетика, нефтегазовая сфера.
