Всього існує чотири території щодо походження українців.

Перша— це теорія «споконвічності» — прихильники цієї теорії вважають, що українці існують стільки, скільки взагалі існує людина сучасного типу, тобто від 30—40 тисяч до 2—3 млн років, а територія нинішньої України з часів раннього палеоліту і до наших днів ніколи не була безлюдною.

Друга—теорія автохтонності (яку заснував М. Грушевський) - українці є осілим корінним населенням України, яке безперервно (на протязі різних історичних періодів) проживає на своїй землі. Себто є автохтонами. Етнічну основу українців становило населення пізнього палеоліту (Мізинська культура), потім неоліту/енеоліту (Трипільська культура). Трипільці, які активно.

Третя теорія— це теорія «єдиної колиски» (яка була загальноприйнятою в СРСР у 1950—80-ті.): зародження і розвиток зєдиної древньоруської народностітрьох близьких слов'янських народів (українців, білорусів, росіян).

Остання, четверта теорія— теорія «незалежного розвитку окремих східнослов'янських народів», тобто українців, білорусів, росіян. Ця теорія ґрунтується на ідеї самобутності українців, котрі нібито не мають нічого спільного зі слов'янами. Вони безпосередньо зародилися на базі трипільської культури, еволюціонувавши пізніше у скіфське плем'я неврів, потім в антів, а відтак і у спільноту часів Київської Русі.
