ГУННЫ - кочевой народ, сложился во II-IV веках в Приуралье из тюркоязычных хунну и местных угров и сарматов. Массовое передвижение гуннов на запад (с 70-х годов IV в.) дало толчок так называемому Великому переселению народов. Подчинив ряд германских и других племен, возглавили мощный союз племен, предпринимавший опустошительные походы во многие страны, подошли к Константинополю и Риму.В 375 гунны разгромили остготский союз племен и захватили Паннонию (377). В конце IV - начале V веков гунны не представляли серьезной опасности для римлян, которые охотно вербовали гуннские отряды для достижения своих военно-политических целей.Наибольшего могущества гунны достигли при Аттиле (433-453 годы). Продвижение гуннов на запад было остановлено их разгромом на Каталаунских полях (июнь 451г.) объединенными силами римлян, франков и вестготов, бургундов, саксов. Это была одна из крупнейших и кровопролитнейших битв в истории человечества. Готский историк Иордан утверждает, что потери с обеих сторон составили 165 тысяч человек. Существуют сведения, что количество убитых доходило до 300 тысяч (!) человек. После смерти Аттилы (453г.) обширное и непрочное государственное образование гуннов распалось.
