Who was Konstantyn Ostrozkyi?
Konstantyn Ostrozkyi was a Ukrainian prince and magnate who lived from 1526 to 1608. He was one of the largest landowners and one of the most influential political and cultural figures in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th century.
Why was he called the "Hero of Three Nations"?
Konstantyn Ostrozkyi worked to protect the interests of three Eastern Slavic peoples - Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Russians. He supported the development of the Ukrainian language and culture. Ostrozkyi established the Ostroh Academy in 1576, one of the first higher education institutions in Eastern Europe. The Academy taught in Church Slavonic, Polish, and Latin. It played an important role in the revival and development of Ukrainian culture.
Ostrozkyi also defended the Orthodox faith and resisted Catholic proselytism in the lands under his control. He worked to reduce the influence of the Polish szlachta (nobility) over the Orthodox population. As a result, Konstantyn Ostrozkyi became a symbol of resistance to foreign domination for Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Russians. This is why he earned the title of "Hero of Three Nations."
