These auxiliary forces were typically non-citizen soldiers who fought alongside the Roman legions and provided additional manpower, specialized skills, and local knowledge of the territories they came from.

While the Roman military relied heavily on Roman citizens serving as legionaries, the use of mercenaries and auxiliary troops was a common practice. The Romans hired foreign warriors, such as Numidian cavalry, Germanic auxiliaries, and others, to support their campaigns and expand their military capabilities.

That said, these mercenaries and auxiliaries were generally integrated into the Roman military structure and subjected to Roman command and discipline. They were not considered a separate entity from the Roman army. The Roman legions, consisting of Roman citizens, remained the backbone of the military force.
