The Third Arab-Israeli War
The Third Arab-Israeli War, also known as the Six-Day War, occurred between June 5-10, 1967. Some of the key details:
- Causes: Increased tensions and military buildups by neighboring Arab states, coupled with closure of strategic waterways by Egypt and a blockade of Israeli shipping in the Red Sea. This was seen as a direct threat by Israel.
- Combatants: Israel vs. Egypt, Jordan, and Syria.
- Results: Israel achieved a decisive victory in just six days. It gained control of the Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. This dramatically changed the geopolitics of the region.
- Significant outcome: Israel more than tripled the area it controlled as a result of this war. Jerusalem was reunified under Israeli control. The Arab states were largely defeated and demilitarized. This established Israel as the region's strongest military power.
