Persian Invasions of Greece

The Persian invasions of Greece, also known as the Greco-Persian Wars, were a series of conflicts between the Achaemenid Empire of Persia and city-states of the Hellenic world. The main invasions occurred during the reign of Darius I and his successor, Xerxes I.

First Persian Invasion (492–490 BC) The first Persian invasion of Greece took place during the time of Darius I. The Persians aimed to punish Athens and Eretria for supporting the Ionian Revolt against Persian rule.

The Persian forces, led by Datis and Artaphernes, landed in the plain of Marathon in 490 BC. The Athenians, led by Miltiades, successfully repelled the Persian forces in the Battle of Marathon.

Second Persian Invasion (480–479 BC) The second Persian invasion, led by Xerxes I, was a larger and more ambitious campaign. Xerxes sought to conquer all of Greece and punish the city-states for their support of the Ionian Revolt.

The Persian forces crossed the Hellespont and marched through Thrace and Macedonia into Greece. They met Greek forces in the famous battles of Thermopylae, Artemisium, Salamis, and Plataea. The Greeks, led by figures like Themistocles and Leonidas, ultimately repelled the Persian invasion.
