По статистике того времени (разумеется, весьма приблизительной), население всей Речи Посполитой составляло 7,5 млн человек, из них в Украине проживало около 2 млн, т. е. примерно 28 %. После 1569 г. в Украине были уничтожены последние следы административного деления на древнерусские княжества, а все украинские земли, вошедшие в состав Речи Посполитой, были разделены на шесть воеводств. Низкую плотность населения в Украине отмечали и все иностранные путешественники того времени. Крупнейшее по территории воеводство в Украине — Киевское — оставалось практически безлюдным.
