Als nun die Zeit kam, da der Bauer sterben sollte, rief er die drei Söhne zu sich und sagte: „Ich bin alt und fühle, dass ich bald sterben muss. Da ich nicht weiß, wie ich mein Gut unter euch aufteilen soll, möchte ich, dass jeder einen Tag lang das tut, was er am besten kann, und danach bekommt jeder seinen Teil.“ „Ei“, dachte der älteste, „ich kann gut mähen.“ Er stand am kommenden Tag früh auf und mähte den ganzen Tag, so dass am Abend auf allen Wiesen des Gutes die Heuhaufen lagen. „Und ich“, dachte der Zweitälteste, „ich kann gut Bäume fällen.“ Und er ging früh in den Wald, fällte dort die drei dicksten und größten Tannen und schleppte sie mit einem Pferdewagen in des Vaters Hof. Der Jüngste Sohn schlief zuerst aus und überlegte sich dann lange, was er tun könnte. „Ich glaube“, sagte er halblaut zu sich, „am besten kann ich singen“, und er sang unter dem Fenster seines Vaters. Als er zwei Lieder gesungen hatte, fiel ihm keins mehr ein, und er hörte auf. „Eigentlich kann ich nichts“, dachte er bei sich und legte sich wieder schlafen, bis der Abend kam. Als der Tag zu Ende war, rief der Vater die drei Söhne zu sich und teilte ihnen mit, was er beschlossen hatte. „Du“, sagte er zum ältesten, „kannst gut mähen. Deshalb bekommst du alle Wiesen meines Gutes. Und du“, sagte er zum zweitältesten, „kannst gut Bäume fällen. Deshalb gehören dir alle Wälder meines Gutes. Und du“, fuhr er fort, indem er den jüngsten ansprach, „du kannst nichts, und deshalb bekommst du nichts.“ Bald danach starb der Vater, und die beiden älteren Söhne bekamen das Gut, wie es der Vater angeordnet hatte. Da sie klug und fleißig waren, konnten sie ihren Besitz erweitern. Der jüngste Sohn aber ging bald vom Hof weg und kam nie mehr zurück. Поскольку я не знаю, как разделить своё имущество между вами, я хочу, чтобы каждый из вас делал один день то, что у них получается лучше всего, а затем каждый получит свою долю".

"Ай, - подумал старший, - я же умею хорошо косить". На следующий день он рано встал и косил целый день, так что вечером на всех лугах поместья лежали стога сена.

"А я, - подумал средний, - я умею хорошо рубить деревья». И он утром рано пошел в лес, срубил там три самых толстых и самых больших ели и притащил их во двор отца на конной повозке.

Самый младший сын вначале отоспался, а затем долго думал, что бы ему сделать. "Я думаю", сказал он тихо про себя, "лучше всего я умею петь", - и он запел под окном своего отца. Когда он спел две песни,  другие не пришли ему на ум , и он остановился. "На самом деле, я ничего не умею делать", - подумал он про себя и пошел спать, пока не наступил вечер.

Когда закончился день, отец позвал к себе трех сыновей и сообщил им, что он решил.  "Ты", - сказал он старшему, - "умеешь хорошо косить. Поэтому ты получаешь все луга моего хозяйства. "А ты", - сказал он среднему , "умеешь хорошо рубить деревья. Поэтому все леса моего имения принадлежат тебе". А ты, - продолжил он, обращаясь к младшему, ты не умеешь ничего, и поэтому не получаешь ничего".

Вскоре отец умер, и двое старших сыновей получили имущество, как и распорядился отец. Будучи умными и усердными, они смогли расширить свои владения. Однако младший сын вскоре покинул двор и больше не возвращался. Не известно, сумел ли он применить это своё умение в жизни.

Once upon a time, there was a farmer who had three sons. The eldest was diligent, the second was strong, but the youngest was foolish and had only foolish thoughts in his head. When the day was over, the father called his three sons and informed them of his decision. "You," he said to the eldest, "are good at mowing. Therefore, you shall receive all the meadows of my estate. And you," he said to the second eldest, "are skilled at cutting down trees. Hence, you shall inherit all the forests of my estate. But you," he continued, addressing the youngest, "are good at nothing, and therefore, you shall receive nothing."

Soon after, the father passed away, and the two older sons received the estate as the father had decreed. Since they were wise and hardworking, they were able to expand their possessions. However, the youngest son left the farm soon after and never returned. It is not known whether he achieved anything in his life.
