Распределение организмов в поверхно­стном слое зависит от наличия в воде кис­лорода, от обилия питательных веществ, солености, температуры и плотности во­ды. В более прохладных водах умеренных и приполярных широт содержится боль­ше кислорода, хорошо развит планктон и обитают рыбы, питающиеся планктоном. В экваториальных и тропических поясах перемешивание водных масс происходит медленно, уровень растворенного в воде кислорода снижается, вместе с этим снижается и количество живых организ­мов.
