Description of the Caucasus Region

The Caucasus region is a mountainous area located between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Relief of the Caucasus Region

The relief of the Caucasus region is characterized by its mountainous terrain, with the Greater Caucasus Range running from the northwest to the southeast and the Lesser Caucasus Range extending to the southwest. These mountain ranges are part of the Alpine-Himalayan mountain system.

The Greater Caucasus Range is the highest and most prominent mountain range in the region. It stretches for about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) and forms a natural barrier between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The highest peak in the Greater Caucasus is Mount Elbrus, which stands at an elevation of 5,642 meters (18,510 feet) and is the highest point in both Russia and Europe.

The Lesser Caucasus Range is located to the southwest of the Greater Caucasus Range. It is shorter and less rugged compared to its counterpart but still boasts several peaks exceeding 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) in elevation.
