The University of London, for instance, includes internal and external students, the latter coming to London only to sit for their examinations. Actually most external students at London University are living in London. The colleges in the University of London are essentially teaching institutions, providing instruction chiefly by means of lectures, which are attended mainly by day students. The colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, however, are essentially residentional institutions and they mainly use a tutorial method. This tutorial system began at Oxford and Cambridge, where each college is a world of its own, with the students in residence, and they can easily appoint tutors to look after each student individually. The system is also used to some extent in the other universities to supplement lectures. Generally speaking there's one member of the teaching staff for every eight students in the universities. The tutorial system brings the tutor into close and personal contact with the student. The colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, being residential, are necessarily far smaller than most of the colleges of the University of London. Education of University standard is also given in other institutions such as colleges of technology and agricultural colleges, which prepare their students for degrees or diplomas in their own field. The three terms into which the British University year is divided are roughly eight to ten weeks. Each term is crowded with activity. The students have vacations between the terms.

Университет в Великобритании -- это место получения высшего образования,место,поступают в которое молодые люди и девушки по окончании курса средней школы,то есть в возрасте примерно 18 лет.
Правда в том,что большинство студентов поступают в университет,для того,чтобы изучать предмет или группу предметов знание которых позволит им зарабатывать на жизнь,работая врачами,адвокатами,инженерами,учителями и т.д. Однако признано то,что университет обязан не просто обеспечивать знаниями в области медицины,закона,инженерных наук,а,вне зависимости от того,что человеку придётся делать или преподавать,обучить студентов так,чтобы они сами всегда стремились к поиску новых знаний и идей.
Изо всех студентов-очников,обучающихся в данное время в английский университетах,3/4 -- мужчины и 1/4 -- женщины. Примерно половина занята изучением таких предметов,как история,языки,экономики или права,другие изучают такие теоретические или прикладные науки,как медицина,стоматология,технология или сельское хозяйство.
Лондонский университет,к примеру,обучает как официальных студентов,так и вольнослушателей,прибывающий в Лондон исключительно для сдачи экзаменов.
