6. Time, November 21, 1994 Last week a simmering american
electorate, angry at a washington establishment more concerned with serving the vested interests that pay for its campaigns that with the declining living standards and perceived moral decay of the rest of america, stormed into polling booths across the country and chucked much of the nation's governing class out of the window. Cone was 40 years long democratic control of the lower house of congress. Gone was the speaker of the house of representatives. Gone were democratic governers in 11 states. And if not gone, certainly drastically diminished was the prospect william clinton's gaining a second term as president. Replacing the democratic liberals was a herd of republicans, led by the china-and-crystal-smashing congressman from suburban atlanta, newt gingrich, the next speaker of the house, who, after a short burst of conciliation on election night, seemed disinclined to throw bill clinton a rope. Gingrich and other republicans have reasons to be cocksure of their standing. Not a single republican member of the senate or the house was defeated at the last week election. The anger of the electorate was anything if not obvious. The top 20% of the country's income earners control half the country's wealth, and only that group's real income has been increasing over the past two decades. These numbers fuel a growing us-vc.-them psychology in the electorate. Clinton did understand this when he campaigned for presidency in 1992. But once in office, clinton seemed not so much a friend of the "little guys" as a captive of the economic and cultural elites. Most disastrously for clinton his ambitious healthcare proposal, while rightly aimed at one of the prime causes of middle-class anxiety, was easily made to look like the epitome of tax-and-spend liberal programs.

Answer: In November 21, 1994, Time magazine published an article discussing the significant political changes that occurred in the United States. The American electorate, frustrated with a Washington establishment that seemed more focused on serving the interests of those who funded their campaigns rather than addressing the declining living standards and perceived moral decay of the rest of the country, expressed their anger by voting out many members of the nation's governing class.
The Democratic Party, which had held control of the lower house of Congress for 40 years, saw its power diminish as voters opted for a wave of Republicans. Notably, Newt Gingrich, a congressman from suburban Atlanta known for his confrontational style, emerged as a leading figure within the Republican Party. Gingrich was set to become the next Speaker of the House, and his initial conciliatory tone on election night quickly faded as he appeared unwilling to extend a helping hand to President Bill Clinton.
The Republicans had reason to feel confident, as not a single member of their party in the Senate or the House of Representatives was defeated in the recent election. The anger of the electorate was evident, driven in part by the fact that the top 20% of income earners in the country controlled half of the nation's wealth, and their real income had been steadily increasing over the past two decades. These statistics fueled a growing perception of an "us versus them" mentality among voters.
During his campaign for the presidency in 1992, Clinton recognized this growing disparity and voiced his support for the "little guys." However, once in office, he seemed to align more closely with economic and cultural elites, leading to a perception that he was out of touch with the concerns of the middle class. Clinton's ambitious healthcare proposal, aimed at addressing one of the main causes of middle-class anxiety, was ultimately portrayed as an example of excessive government intervention and was met with resistance from conservatives.
Overall, the 1994 election reflected a frustrated electorate demanding change and expressing their discontent with the perceived disconnect between the political establishment and the concerns of everyday Americans. The Republican Party emerged victorious, promising to address the issues that resonated with voters, while the Democratic Party faced a significant setback.
