Determining the Time

To determine the time in each of the given sentences, we need to analyze the verb tenses used. Let's go through each sentence one by one:

1) "I hadn't seen my cousin since they were children." - The past perfect tense "hadn't seen" indicates an action that happened before a specific point in the past. - The phrase "since they were children" suggests that the last time the speaker saw their cousin was when they were children. - Therefore, we cannot determine the exact time from this sentence alone.

2) "I left my hometown five years ago." - The past tense "left" indicates an action that happened in the past. - The phrase "five years ago" specifies the time when the speaker left their hometown. - Therefore, the time mentioned in this sentence is five years ago.

3) "While I was studying for my exams, my sister was flying to Paris." - The past continuous tense "was studying" indicates an ongoing action in the past. - The past continuous tense "was flying" also indicates an ongoing action in the past. - Therefore, the time mentioned in this sentence is when the speaker's sister was flying to Paris, which coincided with the time the speaker was studying for their exams.

4) "I was walking in the sunshine last." - This sentence seems to be incomplete, as it does not provide a specific time or duration. - Without additional information, we cannot determine the exact time from this sentence alone.

5) "Last winter, I had the flu for three weeks." - The phrase "last winter" specifies the time when the speaker had the flu. - The past tense "had" indicates an action that happened in the past. - Therefore, the time mentioned in this sentence is last winter, and the duration was three weeks.

6) "I went to America for my holidays last summer." - The past tense "went" indicates an action that happened in the past. - The phrase "last summer" specifies the time when the speaker went to America for their holidays. - Therefore, the time mentioned in this sentence is last summer.

7) "At five o'clock yesterday afternoon." - The phrase "at five o'clock yesterday afternoon" specifies the time mentioned. - Therefore, the time mentioned in this sentence is five o'clock yesterday afternoon.

8) "I joined a new English class last January, and by June, I had taken my exam." - The past tense "joined" indicates an action that happened in the past. - The phrase "last January" specifies the time when the speaker joined the English class. - The past perfect tense "had taken" indicates an action that happened before a specific point in the past. - The phrase "by June" specifies the time when the speaker had taken their exam. - Therefore, the time mentioned in this sentence is last January (for joining the class) and June (for taking the exam).

Please note that some of the sentences provided do not have enough information to determine the exact time.
