There are two types of schools in the UK: state schools where education is free and parents don't pay for their children and private schools where parents must pay for the education of their kids. 2) In the past only children from poor families got education at schools. Children from rich families got education at home. Boys from poor families could go to charity schools. As it was public money,the schools for poor people were named public schools. Later such schools became very popular,they gave good education and they turned into expensive private schools. But the British still called them "public".
